Stepping into a retrofit project only to find minimal wiring can stop contractors in their tracks. ACCA Strategic Partner Tekmar’s technical sales manager, Eric Balt, walked attendees through effective solutions for this common headache during a recent webinar, sharing how contractors can avoid costly wall demolition while upgrading homes with modern comfort solutions.

Two existing wires can do the job of many
The biggest retrofit challenge? Those older homes with just two thermostat wires. Rather than tearing into walls, Tekmar offers a system that uses existing wiring for both power and communication between a Wi-Fi thermostat and an interface module in the mechanical room. This keeps installation costs down while letting homeowners avoid the disruption of extensive rewiring.
Dual fuel setups deliver the best of both worlds
Once you’ve solved the wiring challenge, you can focus on optimal equipment selection. Balt explained how pairing heat pumps with conventional furnaces creates systems that optimize efficiency and operating costs simultaneously. The “balance point”─which Balt noted sits around 37-38 degrees in British Columbia─determines when the system should switch between heat sources based on outdoor temperature, local utility rates, and equipment efficiency.
Rebate programs make upgrades more attainable
These dual fuel solutions are even more attractive when factoring in available incentives. Mass Save® in New England provides substantial rebates for dual fuel conversions, while British Columbia’s program offers up to $10,000-$15,000 in incentives. The BC program stands out by requiring contractor certification in addition to product qualification, with professionals needing gas tickets, heat loss calculation certification, and ventilation credentials.
Configurations adapt to virtually any equipment combination
With the wiring solution and dual fuel strategy in place, Balt discussed the implementation details. From simple furnace/AC setup to complex systems with heat pumps, radiant floors, and ventilation equipment, Tekmar’s interface module handles various configurations with customizable output settings. Balt demonstrated several wiring scenarios that contractors commonly encounter in the field.
New online interface tool demonstrates system settings
Balt then demonstrated Tekmar’s new online tool, Invita, which allows contractors to explore the thermostat’s user interface, showing how the tool puts the user interface online for easier exploration. After scanning a QR code, users can navigate through menu options, including Away, Display, Wi-Fi, Schedule, Time, and Setup. Within Setup, the Relays section reveals all the physical outputs, allowing contractors to configure how these outputs will operate with their specific equipment. Balt noted that while contractors might notice some hydronic settings reflecting the company’s background, all necessary HVACR settings are readily available.
Solutions that make sense for both contractors and homeowners
Smart controls shouldn’t require choosing between customer comfort and practical installation constraints. During the final Q&A session, Balt addressed questions about compatibility with ductless systems, explaining that while their current thermostat is primarily designed for ducted heat pump applications, other manufacturers, like Cleo, offer solutions for ductless systems with IR remote capabilities.
Taking retrofit challenges in stride
Retrofit projects don’t have to be derailed by wiring limitations. With solutions that leverage existing infrastructure, contractors can offer modern comfort options without the headaches of extensive rewiring or wall repairs. As Balt emphasized, the right equipment paired with the right approach can turn these challenges into opportunities for contractors and homeowners alike.
