A primary responsibility of every HVACR program is preparing students for meaningful employment upon graduation. The strongest programs understand that student success is measured not only by what happens in the classroom, but also by where graduates go after completing their education.
To help ensure student success, on April 21, 2026, the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry of the United States and Canada (UA) and HVAC Excellence signed a new agreement that can provide students with advanced placement into the UA apprenticeship program, allowing them to receive credit for what they have already learned.
For HVACR educational programs, colleges, technical schools, instructors, and students, the agreement represents far more than the transfer of credit. It creates a direct connection between quality education and career opportunities with some of North America’s most respected employers.
Connecting Students to Industry-Leading Employers
The United Association administers a United States Department of Labor registered apprenticeship program that prepares individuals for employment with more than 2,600 Mechanical Service Contractors of America (MSCA) contractors and other leading employers throughout North America.
While many HVACR programs have more job opportunities than graduates available to fill them, the UA can connect students with careers that offer the potential for six-figure earnings, health insurance, pension benefits, company vehicles, lifelong learning opportunities, and nearly unlimited potential for advancement.
Depending on a student’s educational achievements, certifications earned, and local UA requirements, qualified graduates may receive consideration for up to one year of advanced placement within participating UA apprenticeship programs.
Why This Matters to HVACR Educational Programs
When prospective students select a program or institution, they evaluate a variety of factors, including graduate employment outcomes.
For HVAC Excellence accredited programs, this agreement provides a powerful recruiting and retention tool. Students and parents increasingly ask a simple question: “What happens after graduation?” This agreement allows institutions to demonstrate a clearly defined pathway from classroom instruction to apprenticeship opportunities and long-term career advancement.
For instructors, the agreement validates the importance of delivering industry-aligned curriculum and nationally recognized certifications. The knowledge students gain in the classroom now has a direct connection to apprenticeship opportunities and career success.
How This Benefits UA Locals and MSCA Contractors
The greatest benefit of this agreement to the UA and its employer partners is access to individuals who have already chosen a career in the skilled trades. These graduates enter the workforce with foundational knowledge in refrigeration, electrical systems, controls, mechanical systems, blueprint reading, safety, and customer relations.
Rather than persuading someone to consider a career in the trades, the focus shifts to helping students understand the opportunities available to them. Graduates of HVAC Excellence accredited programs have already demonstrated their commitment to the HVACR profession. Their challenge is not deciding whether to enter the industry. Their challenge is determining which organization offers the strongest pathway for long-term growth, advancement, and success.
As the skilled trades face significant workforce shortages and increasing retirements, this agreement creates an additional pipeline of qualified candidates who have already demonstrated an interest in HVACR careers and invested in technical education.
Why Accreditation Matters
Programmatic accreditation is a non-governmental, third-party review of a program against established industry standards. This process validates that a program has the resources, staff, facilities, curriculum, and administrative support necessary to produce high-quality, entry-level professionals.
A key requirement for potential advanced placement under the articulation agreement is graduation from an HVAC Excellence accredited program with a grade point average equivalent to a C or higher. Another requirement is successful completion of a series of HVAC Excellence certification examinations that mirror the content taught during the first year of the UA apprenticeship program.
These nationally recognized assessments provide independent verification of student knowledge and technical competency. Think of these examinations as the Advanced Placement (AP) exams of the HVACR industry.
Connecting Education and Industry
The agreement between HVAC Excellence and the United Association represents a significant step forward for HVACR education. By connecting accredited educational programs with apprenticeship opportunities, it creates a stronger pathway from the classroom to the workforce while helping address the industry’s growing demand for skilled professionals.
As the HVACR industry continues to face workforce shortages and increasing demand for highly skilled technicians, partnerships such as this help ensure that students, educators, contractors, and employers all benefit from a stronger and more connected talent pipeline.
How Schools Can Participate
Schools interested in helping students qualify for advanced placement opportunities should consider pursuing HVAC Excellence programmatic accreditation and incorporating the required certification examinations into their curriculum.
